More City & Guilds news from the Regional Chairman http://www.embroiderersguildeast.org.uk/2012/09/more-city-guilds-news-from-the-regional-chairman/ http://www.embroiderersguildeast.org.uk/2012/09/more-city-guilds-news-from-the-regional-chairman/#comments Sat, 15 Sep 2012 09:15:50 +0000 Regional Editor http://www.embroiderersguildeast.org.uk/?p=3439 Continue reading ]]> The Eastern Region have taken the initiative to widen the availability of City and Guilds Level 1 and 2 Certificates in Hand and in Machine Embroidery. These 4 courses are now available as an online distance learning option (could be mailed if required) to work at the student’s own pace at home. At the same time, we are aware that some branches fancied setting up classes but felt daunted by what was required. We now have a Level 1 pair of courses written ready for delivery, which ensures the course requirements are met and students have a high level of tuition. This is available to branches at a licence fee of £50 per teaching group. The only other requirement will be to pay a fee of £35 per student for registration and certification through C&G.

I will be presenting this with samples at the AGM on 6th October 2012 at Histon and will answer any questions and would be happy to meet any interested students. We have registered our first 6 students this week and are up and running. Please help make this another triumph for the Region showing the others how to progress.

Our meetings http://www.embroiderersguildeast.org.uk/2012/08/our-meetings/ http://www.embroiderersguildeast.org.uk/2012/08/our-meetings/#comments Tue, 28 Aug 2012 10:39:26 +0000 Chelmsford Editor http://www.embroiderersguildeast.org.uk/?p=3367 Continue reading ]]> Our meetings are held monthly, on the third Monday of the month, 7.30 – 9.30 at Christchurch hall, New London Road,Chelmsford CM2 0AW. We are a lively and friendly bunch of people whose skills and interests cover a broad spectrum of textile arts and crafts. there is usually someone who can help, whether it is a query about needle lace, quilting, spinning, computer textile design programmes, as well as the usual needle skills to be expected from Embroiderer’s Guild members.

Our business of the night starts at 8.00pm, once our Chairman has managed to prise us away from lots of distractions, Library loans, Raffle, Chat and Sales Tables. We usually have at least one sales table, our Bring and Buy table is ‘manned’ by Avril and Shelagh.

Avril and Shelagh are thanked for their hard work on the Bring and Buy table this year.

There are always fantastic bargains to be had here. Our Speaker will sometimes bring a sales table and sometimes Craft Arena can be found selling much needed items. It is always a good idea to come expecting to spend a little money and go home with just what you needed. We sometimes have book sales when members bring unwanted books for others to purchase, with monies divided between the seller and the branch. We donated £65 to our Young Embroiderers Group at our last sales!

Our talk is usually followed by tea, coffee and biscuits. We usually leave inspired by the talk and looking forward to when we meet again.

Summer School a resounding success! http://www.embroiderersguildeast.org.uk/2012/08/summer-school-a-resounding-success/ http://www.embroiderersguildeast.org.uk/2012/08/summer-school-a-resounding-success/#comments Sat, 11 Aug 2012 09:07:42 +0000 Regional Editor http://www.embroiderersguildeast.org.uk/?p=3258 Continue reading ]]> The opening weekend of the Olympics had nothing to compare with the same period at Belsey Bridge when nearly 50 members from across the Region enjoyed hours of creative study under the watchful eyes of tutors Alison Holt, Angie Hughes and Shelley Rhodes, all giving 110% of their energy and expertise. You only have to look at the photographs to get some idea of what went on, the students’ enthusiasm and new-found friendships, to say nothing of their amazement at their own achievements!

Alison‘s group of students worked from a range of photographs, covering aspects of art theory such as designing balanced compositions and colour mixing in paint and thread. They then created and transferred their own designs, using resist and paint to form a background on silk and applied a range of embroidery techniques to complete the picture.

Angie‘s students were told before the weekend that they would have 2 days worth of exciting collage and stitch, taking an old book and having the courage to “muck it up”!

Students in Shelley‘s group worked from their own design source to create mixed media pieces combining a variety of papers and fabrics making a unique ground on which to ‘draw’. Lots of techniques were introduced to encourage those who were apprehensive about their drawing skills! The emphasis was on looking, reviewing and re-working areas of the ‘drawings’ so that parts become very tactile.

There was such a happy atmosphere and it was a most enjoyable weekend, which will hopefully be repeated in February and August next year – watch this space!
