We are a friendly bunch who share a love of textiles.
You do not need to be an expert to join, just enjoy textile arts!
If you have a skill to share or want to learn a textile skill this is the place for you.
We meet fortnightly on a Tuesday morning at Friends Meeting house, Colchester and welcome new members of all ages and abilities!
The Colne and Colchester Branch was established in 1986 when. With 110 members, many of whom were new to embroidery, classes were run on embroidery for beginners with Jill Carter and Goldwork with Joan Hardingham. So successful were these beginnings that the Branch mounted an Exhibition of Contemporary Embroidery at Colchester Castle Museum in 1989.
The Branch continues to flourish and welcomes new members of whatever level – enthusiastic beginners and experienced adepts. Over the last couple of years exhibitions have been held in Colchester at Slack Space, Franklin’s, and Red Lion Books, and members have taken part in Regional and National Guild competitions, with Su Allington winning the President’s Cup in the Annual members’ competition of 2010, with “Sheltering Free”.
Members attend as many events as they wish. We are also involved in some on-going projects within the Guild and with other groups in Colchester. For the 2012 Olympics, the Guild is creating a series of embroidered/textile postcards to reflect each participating country and each Branch has been assigned one: we have been given Norway. We are also working with Firstsite on the theme of “Hosting”, for an installation which will be included in a pavilion which is to stand within the new Firstsite premises opening in September this year.
Enthusiasm amongst a friendly group of people is what identifies the Branch, together with a huge willingness to share skills and encourage others to develop talents that they may have been unaware existed ! We hope you enjoy our exhibition……….
We welcome new members, you are welcome to come along for a session FREE to see if you would like to join!
We meet fortnightly on Tuesday mornings 9.30am to 12noon at Friends meeting house, Colchester
